Charles was born in Cumberland, England, on the 10th April, 1872 (according to his attestation form). He enlisted in Lake Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, 21st September 1915, stating his occupation as a farmer, and his next of kin as Mrs. Marianne Nicholson, of West Boldon, Newcastle on Tyne.
He was five feet eight and a quarter inches in height, had a ruddy complexion, blue eyes and dark brown hair, and belonged to the Church of England.
